Works Just Fine
By asfhgwt
This light seems a bit bulky, but it works great and it's hard to find anything similar to it. We leave it on all the time-- the light goes off until dusk, then comes on at app. half-power until dawn. If it detects motion, it goes to full power. Note that the electronics in the round part that attaches to the wall takes up too much space for the wiring to fit inside. You'll definitely need an electrical box of some kind in the wall to house the wires. (This makes it unlikely that you'll be able to just bolt it to a brick wall.) I had to cut out a portion of plastic siding with a knife and do a lot trial-and-error before I could attach the light successfully; it was a pretty big pain in the butt, actually.

SL-4166-PB Carriage Light
By M. B.
I won't restate what has already been said, but this light works as advertised. I finally found a motion and light sensor that actually works. The "twilight" mode is pretty cool. It burns only half of the bulbs capacity while it's on (must be incandescent). When it senses movement, it comes on at full capacity to a predetermined amount of time that you set. Once there's no more movement and the set amount of time has elapsed, it goes back to the twilight mode (or off if you want). As with the other options, you can choose to have the twilight mode on or off if you don't like it. There's also another mode that allows you to turn the light on continuously (like a normal light switch) if you have a need for that. I just installed it yesterday (VERY easy if you're only swapping out an existing lamp) and all the functions seem to work. Initially I'm very happy with this and I will be getting more (I only bought one to test it.) When you begin researching motion detecting devices as a whole, you quickly learn from customer feedback that there are a lot of issues with the light sensor or the motion sensor not working properly. Yes this lamp is a bit pricy, but keep in mind there's usually a good reason why any product is more expensive than the others and it usually has to do with quality.Due to a recent incident, I have been doing a lot of home security research. I found out one of the first steps in home security is lighting. In my opinion this lamp fills that requirement perfectly. It's automatically off in the daytime, burns only half the energy at night and lights up at full capacity when there's any movement. And best of all, everything works as it should.Update: It's December 8th 2012 and they all work perfectly. I have four of them and none have failed in any way. I do my rounds at night about every one to two times a month to make sure they are working. These lights are a good investment in home security and have now been through all four seasons (plus) with no issues. I highly recommend them.

Carriage light review
By Joseph R. De Silva
I have lantern type lights on each side of my garage doors. The motion sensor went out on one of the two eight year old lamps. I replaced them with these Heath-Zenith SL-4166 polished brass lamps. They were very easy to install by this clumsy, non-handy, man. They are very attractive, and the motion sensors can cover a substantial area. The sensor distance switch is on the back side of the interior of the light, so you need to remove the entire fixture from the mount to change the sensitivity setting. This is a negative.
