Flexible, effective, and attractive basic fan system for your A/V cooling needs
By B. Ripley
I recently purchased this fan package for use in a home theater component cabinet. My new preamp/processor runs pretty hot, and I wanted to spot cool this component as well as add some additional airflow above an amplifier situated at the top of my cabinet. This package is a great way to solve a minor cooling issue you might have, or simply give your electronics a happier life of cooler temperatures. A must if you have some improperly ventilated components in your home theater, television setup, or audio system, and many times space constraints simply don't allow for ideal placement of your equipment. This basic cooling package does include everything you need for you to run your fans all of the time, or it can be activated by a switched outlet in your power center or on your receiver. You'll need to purchase a temperature sensor-- of which there are a variety available made by Cool Components (I believe their higher-end unit is available on Amazon)-- to switch power to the fans on and off automatically, and/or regulate fan speed. Take a look to see what you need. And if you have any questions? Don't hesitate to contact Cool Components directly for support. I've got to say here that they were extremely helpful in guiding me to the right temperature controller for my needs, and spent a good amount of time with me over the phone educating me about the ins and outs of low voltage systems such as theirs-- and I've had a great experience with their products because of it.It's worth it to check out the Cool Components website to take a look at what they have available, and there's a lot of good information for you if you're a bit ignorant, as I was, about creating an efficient and effective solution highly tailored to your needs. This package serves as a great way to get your fan system up and running *now*, and you can add further tweaks if you need. Again-- ask them directly for help if you think you need it.If noise is an issue, the selectable voltage on the power supply can vary the fan speed and give you some flexibility in your setup, and I find that the fans are nearly silent running at lower speeds, and move enough air to not really need cranking up. I purchased a basic temperature controller that activates the fans when the temp. in my cabinet reaches 88 degrees, and I am running the fans at half-power-- 6 volts-- and they do a fine, very quiet job. I could make more noise mouth breathing than those fans do at 6 volts. I should say that at full power the fans are too loud for my application. Although from my experience they are some of the quietest, best made fans on the market today, even at full speed, the noise is there (as it is with ANY fan at full power), and it's too much too close to my listening position. Fortunately I don't need to run them at full speed, as the fans move plenty of air at half.Let's see, what else. If your fans will be visible, don't worry-- these look great. Solid, tight construction, handsome and unobtrusive black metal. Small in stature, big in effectiveness.
