Great bass, so-so electronics

Okay, first the good news - this is a very well-constructed bass. It's neck-through, long scale, with a very fast neck, and it's made of great wood. The matte finish looks like a stealth bomber, and the hardware finish is a mix of chrome and black that's pretty sharp. I love the body shape, the look of the bass, and the feel of it. It's all very top-notch.Just a warning that it is a pretty substantial weight. My bathroom scale estimate is that it clocks in at about ten pounds. Get a wide strap, do some stretching, and make sure you're current with a chiropractor. It's not horrible, and it feels nice once you're used to it, but this isn't a plywood lightweight.My only nits have to do with the electronics. First, these are not active pickups. They are the EMG Hz pickup, which is a passive pickup. A quick search of the various bass forums on the term "EMG Hz" is a lot like searching for opinions on the new Mustang on a Chevy forum. The pickups are okay, but they are not active, and I would say that they are acceptable but not perfect. There is also a 3-band EQ. This is active and 18v, so there are two batteries in there, easily accessible from a door on the back. I personally think the EQ is not great. If you dial in the high end at 100% there is a slight hiss. My biggest complaint is that even though the cavity is shielded, there's a fair bit of noise, especially when compared to an instrument with fully active EMG pickups. I practice in a room filled with fluorescent lights, computers, bluetooth, wifi, and all kinds of electronics with poor plastic shielding, and this bass picks up everything. It's not as bad as a fully passive bass with no shielding, but I'm probably going to eventually tear out the pickups and preamp and go full active.This was the first bass I've bought from Amazon, and it was packaged well, double cartons and no damage whatsoever. These are Asian-made, but set up at Schecter's LA factory, and the setup was flawless. Low action, perfect intonation, and ready to roll. Of course, the stock strings, Ernie Balls, were the first thing to go. Threw a set of roundwounds on there, and it's golden. The long scale and nice neck mean a very solid B string with no flop.Overall, a great bass, especially for the price. Just make sure you understand the difference on the Hz part, because everyone keeps saying this thing has active pickups, and it does not.
