Quiet, cool, sensible

We are replacing a set of perfectly good Dell switches with this one, and have been happy. The Dells were fine, but had a very loud cooling fan. Just on energy use alone we can justify this purchase (100W saved over 1 year is 876 kilowatt hours, or roughly $100).The Procurve has a great warranty (lifetime), good build quality, no fan noise, and low energy use. The 10/100 ports for workstations are plenty fast, then we use a single gigabit upload cable connect to our main backbone. Note that is really a 22 port switch, with two gigabit uplink ports. Model J9019B is a true 24 port switch with two gigabit uplinks.Consider also the D-Link DES-1024D.if you don't need a gigabit uplink. The D-Link uses even less power, and has a few tricks to reduce that even more if cables are short and computers are idle.

I had the Netgear GS116 Gigabit switch and after 1-2 years some ports started acting strangely. After I looked high and low for a switch I almost gave up and wanted to order the same GS116 when I found this.The most important thing for me was 16+ ports with no fan because this is in the room I sleep. Besides this model and the GS116 I belive all switches have fans.The switch is awesome. It works well, stays cool enough and provides 24 Gigagbit ports. The only downside is the price but if it lasts me at least 5 years I am OK with that.

The HP Procurve was easy to install right out of the box, no hassel. If money permitts I'll buy another two or three.
