5Excellent upgrade - but get a solid bench!
By D. Matheny
I've been using the Hornady Lock-n-Load press fairly heavily for years, but I hadn't upgraded to the case feeder because I just didn't have enough space for it. Fortunately, I recently built a new workshop and was finally able to take the plunge. The upgrade process was somewhat frustrating - but the end result was well worth it, so I'm going to go over my experience briefly here.In my new workshop, I built my bench using a 2x4 frame that is anchored to the wall on the back and then had 2 sheets of 5/8" plywood on top. The top wasn't as thick as my old setup; but, it seemed rock solid. The initial install of the case feeder and press was very easy. The install and setup for 9mm took about an hour and I ended up using the #6 V-Block instead of the #2 that is mentioned in the manual. At that point, I did some testing and everything seemed to be working great - until I actually started reloading...Unfortunately, the problems began almost immediately once I was actually reloading. The problems I encountered included:1) Cases were occasionally flipped upside down2) The funnel that cases fall into would jam every 30-40 rounds - and would typically start overflowing before I realized what was going on3) Every once in a while, a case would overshoot the funnel altogether and land on the floorThe funny thing is that my reloading speed increased significantly even with these issues; but, I typically enjoy reloading and these glitches were just ruining it for me.Over the next couple of weeks I spent time on the phone with Hornady as well as looking over everything I could find about troubleshooting this case feeder. It turned out I wasn't alone with these problems and I found lots of helpful little tips that improved the situation - but never resolved it 100%.Anyway, I was just about to the point where I was going to sell the whole setup and switch to a Dillon when I made a fortunate observation. It turned out that the 2 sheets of 5/8" plywood I was using as a bench top had just a tiny bit of flex - which was resulting in a fair amount of movement at the case feeder. I could run the case feeder all day and it wasn't jamming at all - unless I was also reloading, which caused the case feeder to shake slightly. That explained why all my problems were happening in the little funnel AFTER the case had been dispensed. At that point, I tore off the table top and replaced it with three 3/4" sheets of plywood that I glued & screwed together to make an extremely solid platform. I also bought a section of Formica and laminated it to the top since solvents were tearing up my previous top faster than expected.)I remounted the press and case feeder; and, Wow! That made all the difference!Since putting on the new top I have loaded several hundred rounds without a single problem. No jams, no upside down cases, and no cases overshooting the funnel. Not only has my productivity more than doubled from what it was before the case feeder; but, it's easier to stay focused on the little safety issues - like making sure the powder levels are all correct.Overall, I would highly recommend this case feeder if you want to boost your productivity with the Lock-n-Load AP! It's well worth the money for such a huge productivity boost. If, however, you start having case feed issues like I described above - look hard at your mounting surface before blaming the case feeder itself. This really is a case where you can't make your reloading bench too solid!*** UPDATE 11/16/2011 ***Well, I've loaded a couple thousand rounds since changing out the table and this feeder continues to work flawlessly! Honestly, I haven't had a single upside down case or jammed funnel - so it looks like the problem is well and truly resolved. My biggest problem now is keeping the primer tube full... :)

4Good for experienced reloaders
By The Count
The device is relatively easy to install but does require removing the LNL press so that a different base plate that the feeder comes with can be installed. A progressive press is a finicky device and this adds another piece of complexity, not that its rocket science, but beginners will have a steep learning curve. The most difficult part is adjusting the guide rod and choosing the proper V shaped case pusher. In my setup I found that V #5 worked best for 45ACP NOT #2, which is longer and always got stuck in the shell plate. Also too much speed is an enemy of the case feeder.... slow and steady is the way to go.

5hornady lnl ap casefeeder
By M. Wilburn
I own two casefeeders on two lock n load presses, one for small primers, the other for large. It is faster using feeder but reason I like them is I can give all my attention to safely operating press. Safety over speed! Feeder works well and really completes lock n load set up!
