Best stethoscope I've ever owned
By atp162
The Welch Allyn Tycos Harvey DLX is the best stethoscope I've used in nearly 3 decades of working in EMS. I've carried a DLX for over 10 years, after stumbling across the WA scopes on a website pretty much by accident. The acoustics are far superior to any other scope I've tried, including the 3 Littmanns I've owned and the numerous new stethoscopes that my interns carry. (The ambient noise in the environments I work in pretty much rule out using electronic scopes, and with the weather, body fluids and battering our equipment has to endure, you wouldn't want one.) The Harvey DLX picks up on faint sounds that other steths miss. My students are constantly impressed that they can auscultate better with my DLX than with their Littmann cardiology scopes. The DLX head is heavy and solid, the tubing thick yet foldable, the binaurals conform well with use, and the earpieces fit well. The tubing does eventually crack at the stress points from repeated stuffing in ones' pockets, but Welch Allyn has graciously sent me replacement tubing free of charge not just once, but twice. The soft earpieces have occasionally come unscrewed, so tighten them regularly, and I've had a couple soft eartips that ripped from years of use. I've had the hard earpieces on now for the last few years (the steth came with small and large soft eartips and a set of hard plastic ones and they were all I had left) but they work fine and are perfectly comfortable. The bell of the DLX unscrews, and since I don't have much call to use anything but the diaphragm side, it saves some space in a pocket to leave it off. It doesn't hurt the performance of the steth one bit. I haven't yet figured out how to replace the diaphragm cover (the Elite has a snap-on rim to change diaphragms but the outer rim of the DLX does not look like it unscrews or pulls off), but when that time comes, I'll probably call Welch Allyn. Their customer service has always been helpful and courteous, and their products reflect thoughtful design and quality. The Tycos Harvey Elite, the less expensive cousin to the DLX, is also an excellent scope in terms of acoustics, and is highly recommended for those who cannot afford the DLX. I've given several Elites and DLX scopes as gifts, and they have never failed to impress their users. I expect that I'll be using my DLX until I retire. Great stethoscopes, Welch Allyn. Thanks!
