SIMRAD TP22 --- A MUST FOR THE SINGLE HANDER

Never having used or even been aboard a sailboat using a tiller pilot, I was entering into an unknown relationship with a piece of technological gear. I had heard stories and recommendations which covered the full spectrum from GREAT to TERRIBLE. I first bought a Raymarine tiller pilot, but when I and the sales people at West Marine couldn't get the thing to work properly with my Garmin GPS, even after the unit was sent to Raymarine for evaluation, and it was returned with a clean bill of health, I got a refund and went with Simrad. The tiller pilot really works, and is a wonderful labor saver. A handheld remote is really a must have, as it is so convienient, since much of the steering is simply power steering using the pilot and being almost any where on the boat, instead of at the helm with tiller in hand. If you are an old fashioned salt with woolys, you might not be a good candidate for a TP. I wear New Age Wool(FLEECE) and am NEW FASHIONED. The one thing you must keep control of is water entering the unit. It is well sealed, but when it's raining I cover it with a piece of vinyl, so as to keep the unit as dry as posible. Many people have told me their tiller pilots shorted out in heavy rain. They, I am sure did not bother to put a rain cover on their units. If you respect the unit and help it to stay dry, I am sure you will have no problem with this item.
