3Needs a full overhaul before you can use it
By A. DANILOFF
I bought this vise from Home Depot, so I had a "privilege" to pick and choose the "perfect" one among six of these vises available in store. However, due to the fact that this vise made in China, and Chinese don't give a damn about quality but to make a quick buck on us Americans, I had to perform the complete overhaul and refinement of this vise before I could put it in day to day heavy use. Here are the three major issues and concerns I had with this product:1. A really bad grease used on this vise. Chinese use a cheap petroleum based cosmoline grease, the same that they use on their crappy SKS and Kalashnikov knock offs. This grease may be good as a rust inhibitor, but absolutely terrible as a lubricant in the long run. It will dry and gum up the lead screw over time. Which will lead to its excessive wear and tear, and finally total failure. So, I had to completely disassemble this new vise and wash each of its part with the rubbing alcohol to completely remove all its original grease.2. Lead screw is very crudely made, has a lot of metal shards and chunks of metal remained after the machining process. I had to remove this stuff using my lathe and polish it a little bit. The same thing with the lead screw guide.3. No washers under the jam bolt heads. If you going to tighten and un-tighten jam bolts to rotate this vise around its base, the bolt heads will damage base finish and eat through the metal. I had to put two copper washers under the jam bolt heads to remedy this problem.I re-assembled this vise and lubricated it using synthetic Super Lube (with Syncolon) grease generally sold in Ace Hardware stores. This grease is the best from what is available for this purpose. Now my new vise is ready for its intended purpose and function.Given the amount of labor and time I spent on conditioning and refining this vise I award it three stars, cause it's is nothing more than two-three chunks of metal connected with the lead screw. Even a Chinese sweat shop could have done it right in the first place. I'd prefer to pay a few extra bucks to buy this vise proudly made in USA with American quality. Stop corporate greed, screw Chinese, buy American products - something along these lines.

Nice vise for the money. This vise was made in China under specifications from Wilton. I regret seeing things made in China, knowing we can do it better in the USA, but it is still a good vise. My background was - a Snap On Tool dealer, a General Certified Mechanic, and I have always been into working with tools, and different equipment. I have several vises in my home workshop already, but I like the multi-purpose swivel feature on this vise.

5Buy One and Enjoy It Forever
By J. Nelson
Wilton Multipurpose Vise - 5in., Model# 69999Don't make the same mistake I did -- buy this vise today, take it with you when you move, and enjoy yourself and every job you have to do forever after. Most of us put up with a hunk of junk and "never get around to" doing it right. Blink twice and you're 64 years old. -- Forget it, order this now.Mine was not packed well enough for shipment -- the seller makes the shipper eat the return shipment costs, so the seller can't be bothered to open each carton and ram in the extra Styrofoam blocks that would keep this 46 lb monster from bashing itself to death. Check that the little rotation and tilt locking screws are not bent (the silver things -- everything else is gray or blue). Finally, it is not true that the (main) serrated jaws are replaceable but the two pipe jaws are not. The text all over the Internet is wrong. There is a single pipe jaw on one side and double pipe jaw on the other, and the double jaw is replaceable. If that one has "bite", that's all you'll need. But where are replacements sold? Post a link if you find a source. What a happy surprise every time I walk into the shop and remember I finally put a vise on the workbench that wants to help me and really can.
