4Stagg snare case - recommended
By R. MacEachern
I bought this case when I upgraded to my beloved 14X6.5 DW snare. I can't afford to replace the snare right now if it is damaged so I wanted something strong and safe. The case is 100% lined with felt. The "feet" are hollow and open to the main storage area (picture Mickey Mouse's head with room for the ears... not that I'm suggesting anything :)). The shell is strong enough that the sides will not bend or fold without considerable force (more force than dropping would generate). The case is made of two separate parts, front & back. When closed the edges overlap nearly 100% adding even more strength to the edge area ("edge" being the depth of the case). A nylon belt with two clips fully encircles the case. Clips are at top and bottom to fasten it closed. The "feet" keep the bottom clip from touching ground. The belt is permanently attached to front and back of the case and allows adjustable length (actually allows adjustable case "depth", more on this in a moment). The clips are plastic, but feel strong and give confidence that they won't come undone on their own.The case says 14 inch, and my snare is 14 inch, so I wondered how snug a fit it would be. I put the snare throw off facing into one of the case legs and there is still plenty of room around the sides. In fact I added a towel across the bottom of the case to fill in space and the drum is still "loosely" snug with minimal movement. I'm sure it could fit a 14 inch snare with much larger lugs, or possibly a 15 inch snare fairly easy (disclaimer: notice I said "possibly" a 15 inch, no guarantee it will)."Depth adjustable from 5 to 7 inches"With the case empty & closed I am guessing it allows the 5 inch minimum depth. Like I said, my snare is 6.5 inches deep. When I close the case, the front of the case sits on the snare rim, so it is the snare shell itself supporting any weight on the case when laid on its back. If the case is standing on its legs, the case takes the full weight. I am undecided if this is good or bad, so this is the only reason I rated 4 stars instead of 5. I baby this thing so much it doesn't really matter in my situation, but wanted to mention so you can judge for yourself.Overall I strongly recommend this case. I pretty much stay local so it is great for what I do. Because the case is in two pieces that slide together it isn't a water tight seal, I don't consider it "ATA approved", but the manufacturer doesn't claim it is. If you're looking for near maximum protection and you do most of your own schlepping (which most of do), this case is great. If you're not doing your own schlepping, congratulations, you've made it to the big time... and I'm available if you're looking for a new drummer. ;)
