Just right...

Okay, so I feel a bit like Goldilocks at this point.When my nearly 10-year-old Wenger Standard Issue watch started breaking down (first the band, then in terms of timekeeping), I went online to look for a new watch. I wanted a simple, elegant one that was reliable. But I did have some prerequisites: I wanted one with a black dial (Wenger's is white), and I wanted one with a case a little bit larger than the 35mm Wenger Standard Issue. I tried several different watches before ordering this watch by St. Moritz/Momentum.The first watch I tried was the Victorinox Alliance. It was a nice looking watch, and worked well, but the "deployment clasp" band was horrendously uncomfortable and the numbers on the dial were difficult to read except at certain angles. The band was ultimately the deal-breaker, however, and I sent it back.I then tried the Hanowa Swiss Military Recruit watch. This watch was aesthetically pleasing, and cost a bit less than the Alliance, but it was a total disaster: it lost time, and the date would not set properly, changing between nine and ten p.m. instead of at midnight. Again, I sent it back.I ordered this watch because it was what I was looking for in terms of appearance: about a size 40mm case, not too big or thick, but not too small; a black dial with clearly visible numbers; and a metallic band with a safety clasp.This watch has met and exceeded my expectations. It looks more or less like what you see in the picture, perhaps a tad bit darker. It is made of titanium, so it does not shine like stainless steel. (If you are looking for something flashier, then this watch will not meet your needs.) The face of the watch, on the other hand, is nicer than pictured: the numbers are very legible; the luminous hands make nighttime viewing easy; and the watch even has a wonderfully simple-to-use alarm. In addition, this watch is extremely lightweight, apparently because of the weight of the titanium. (Again, if you are looking for something heavy, this one is not for you.) An unexpected bonus was that the crown of this watch, unlike many others, does not rub against the back of your hand. Since I wear the watch on my left hand, this was a real plus, making it easily one of the most comfortable watches I have ever owned.I assume a quartz watch will be fairly accurate (perhaps a mistake, given the Hanowa), and this watch keeps perfect time. In short, this one was "just right," as the story goes. If you are looking for something masculine but not macho, practical but not boring, solid but not clunky, then this is the watch for you. Highly recommended.

This is my second St. Moritz Momentum Pathfinder Alarm Watch; the first is still working fine, but I wanted the all titanium bracelet for this one. The screw-down feature makes them completely waterproof. I seldom use the alarm feature but it's nice to have. What sells this watch is the lightweight all-titanium case and bracelet; not at all like so many large (and heavy) clunky stainless steel watches I have tried. No negatives about this fine product.

I'd never heard of Momentum until I saw this watch on Amazon, but apparently they've been around for a long time making watches for other companies. Their history, and Jon Morris' review here on Amazon, convinced me to give this watch a chance. I have the watch now, and I have to say that I couldn't be happier about my decision. I look forward to wearing this not only as my "every day" casual watch, which is what it seems to be designed for, but also as my "business casual" watch.
