4Works for me with Linux
By VERNON J. VANSTEENKIST
First, what does this device do?Answer: It allows you to remotely view the display and remotely access the keyboard and mouse of a computer similar to TightVNC, RealVNC or other VNC implementations.Second, why would I buy this if TightVNC and RealVNC are free?Answer: Typical VNCs require you to have network access to the computer you are trying to remote control. If you do not have direct network access, i.e. the computer has no network card, is connected to a VPN, can not run vncserver etc., this device may work for you since it connects to the VGA and USB ports of the computer you want to remote control. Since this device connects to the remote computer's VGA and USB ports, you can change BIOS settings, BIOS passwords etc. before the operating system has booted. The Spider I use contains firmware 03.00.01. I am using it to remote control a Windows XP machine.Disclaimer: Just because it works for me does not mean it will work for you. I only use this device for VNC type functions (KVM over IP). It has many other features which I have not tested.Pros:1) Java based client which works with the Sun Java 6 browser plugin for Ubuntu 9.10 and the Iced Tea open source free Java browser plugin which comes with Ubuntu 11.04.2) Powered by two USB ports. No power supply needed.3) The client in similar to the Java applet that comes with RealVNC. If you know how to use RealVNC, you will probably have no trouble using this device.4) Small and attaches directly to a computer.5) Inexpensive compare to other KVM over IP devices.6) Can be controlled and used strictly with a Web Browser with a Java plugin. No proprietary software is required.7) Java client uses TCP. This means you can tunnel the client protocol over ssh.Cons:1) Does not support standard VNC protocol This means you can not use the TightVNC or RealVNC client with this device. If you use Linux, you must use the Java client.2) Uses commercial GoAhead Web server with asp scripting language. Probably has negative impact on the cost of the unit and long term supportability. Probably should have used fnord web server with CGI or something similar instead.Tips:1) If you are connecting this device to a Windows machine, be sure to follow the instructions regarding Windows mouse configuration.2) Tunneling over ssh.a) In the Spider Interfaces->KVM Console settings, tick Default Java VM and KVM Console Deployment->Applet. You want your browser to manage your network settings.b) Sample ssh command:$ ssh -D 8282 username@xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx.Note that the IP address is NOT the IP address of the Spider. xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is the IP address of the machine on the Internet which you can access through ssh and is also connected to your Intranet network which contains your Spider. This ssh command will create a SOCKS 5 proxy on your local machine (127.0.0.1) at port 8282.c) Configure Firefox to use the proxy. Edit->Preferences->Advanced->Settings. Tick Manual Proxy Configuration and SOCKS V5. Enter 127.0.0.1 for the Socks Host and 8282 for the port.d) Optional: If you want to use your Intranet DNS, type about:config in to the Firefox URL window. Search for socks. Set network.proxy.socks_remote_dns to true.e) Type in the IP address of Spider device in the Firefox URL window and access your Spider.I don't know why Lantronix does not include these instructions in their manual. I would rather tunnel through ssh than open another port in my firewall to access the Spider.

4Great product for home or colo
By Doug Warner
This one-port, self-powered IP-KVM is perfect for colo use. If you have remote hands, you're just a call away from being able to debug server problems with full BIOS access. The price is amazing to get the features provided by this IP-KVM and have the flexibility provided by it.

5Quick setup, works great.
By David Zemke
I've been doing Sysadmin work for about 15 years and if there's anything I like it's the ability to work remotely. This little device works like a charm in that respect. Out of the box it took about 10 minutes to setup using a serial port session (DB9 to RJ45 cable included). Connected it on an HP server I've been working on and after logging into the web interface (first http, then spawns a Java based console window) was looking at the screen and playing with the BIOS, then using kickstart to load the OS. Only been using it for a few hours but so far it seems like a solid product that does what it advertises and does it well. I'll update this review if I find any deficiencies, but so far - so good. Very happy with it!
